Volunteering at Singapore Art Museum

Since February, I’ve been volunteering at Singapore Art Museum to make my Saturdays more interesting. Living in Singapore for a while now, I felt like I had to do something new and different to keep myself from getting bored.

Last Saturday, I volunteered for Lee Wen’s Performance Art Workshop. Lee Wen is one of the most respected artists in Singapore with great contributions to the performance art genre. His work usually revolves around the themes of identity, society, and culture.

Saturday

There is really no coherent story with these photos, so this is more of photo dump than a blog entry.

I was on my way to the office to finish some work and I sat beside an old man on the bus. I found it cute that he was reading a book with big font letters. Who reads books while commuting these days?? Everyone’s glued to their iPhones.

Healthy eating Day 14.

Isn’t it endearing to see a group of elderly men hanging out and chilling together?

This reminded me of a picture of women having a picnic I took in Shinjuku Gyoen, Japan 4 years back. There is nothing more special than having real, life-long friendships… not just the seasonal/party friends.

The quiet and barren Central Business District. Quite refreshing.

Sunday Brunch at Club Street

Last Sunday, my awesome-cook-of-an-officemate threw a Mediterranean brunch at her place in Club Street. Seriously, it was worth waking up early for! We had a delectable spread of food I cannot pronounce, but everything was so good. To say that my tummy was happy that day is an understatement.

She even prepared pavlova for dessert. All of the food we had, was cooked by her from scratch! Mental note: need to learn how to cook.

After brunch, I roamed around Club Street as it is a very photogenic neighborhood, perfect for photo-ops. It has vintage stores, pubs, quaint cafes and bookstores. I highly recommend any of my friends who find delight in design to pop by this area whenever they visit Singapore.

I was amused by the puppet and the wooden airplane at the storefront of this children’s bookstore.

K ki and The Little Drom Store is a cafe, patisserie, toy store, and vintage shop, all rolled into one. They sell old Polaroid cameras here which I find really cool.

They also sell random knickknacks which I wanna go back for to place in my office desk.

Some more strolling…

Manila

Last January, I purposely didn’t book a flight to Manila on Holy Week-end and instead just visit in June. I felt like I went home to Manila far too often in 2011 and now, I just want to stay put and grow roots in Singapore.

Unexpectedly, I flew to Manila last week, April 9, for a round of fieldwork. It is quite out of the blue, but I was excited to be back sooner than planned. I didn’t have enough time to do everything I wanted to do and to meet everyone I wanted to catch-up with, but I was able to pretty much stretch what little time I got.

Some photos at Changi Airport, popular for being one of the best airports in the world. I wouldn’t disagree.

We departed Singapore at around 6PM and arrived in Manila at around 915PM. I love taking night flights when flying back to Manila because the view of the city from the top is gorgeous because of the lights! Singapore cannot match!

Then the next day was the start of fieldwork which spills over for the next four days.

These kids saw me with my camera and they asked me to take a picture of them!

I took this picture at the last day of fieldwork. How perfect.
The highlight of every trip to Manila would always be a dinner out with the family. :)
Alas, I had to go back to Singapore. But weirdly, this trip is the first trip I did not feel sad about leaving. Usually, there’s an intense pang of sadness when I would be dropped off at the airport.
The waiting lounge for my flight back is the same lounge where I was 4 years back, en route to Tokyo for my student exchange. It’s the best time of my life, still untopped. I have always loved travel. I am curious where life will lead me in the next few years.
Whenever I ride the cab from the airport to my flat, this is the view I look forward the most… and when I see it, I am reminded that I am back to the grind.
 See you in June Manila!

Orchard

This weekend, I took my new camera for a spin and I must say, I really missed snapping photos using a real camera. When my almost four year old Canon G9 broke at the end of last year, I just kept on using Instagram (which I think is one of the best apps) to take photos. So, from hereon, I will be posting more photos and try keeping this blog active!

Orchard Road is just six bus stops away from my place, so it has become my default go-to place on lazy afternoon weekends. Here are some photos I’ve snapped:
